In the past, Montmartre Hill was crowned by windmills. They schowed Parisians the direction of the wind each hour. They also served to break down materials from the factory. There were fourteen windmills on the small hill.
The first one «Le Moulin Vieux » was built in 1570. Twelve disppeared in the first half of the XIX century. The last one «Le Moulin à Poivre » functioned until 1878.
Windmills are considered as a popular symbol in Montmartre. Even though only two remain, they have been transformed into ballrooms called « Le Blute Fin » and the « Radet ». Along with the gardens and a Farm house these two windmills were called « Moulin de la Galette ».
Through his painting « Bal du Moulin de la Galette » Renoir immortalized this region. Rebuilt in their original form, today the windmills are part of the poetic charm of Montmartre.
